On the day before the 11th KnowHow-Meeting you can take part in the following workshop, which will be presented in a condensed form (duration 4 hours) by our expert Dr. Irina Steenbeek. Learn from her experience, which she will be happy to pass on to you. The number of participants is limited.
This workshop will provide guidance on establishing a business case for metadata management. This method allows for developing a metadata strategy, roadmap, and implementation approach.
Many companies have started data-related initiatives like data quality, analytics, digital transformation, etc. However, not all of them realize that metadata management is a mandatory foundation for all these initiatives. Metadata management, similar to data management, requires a matching set of capabilities like governance, architecture, lifecycle management, and quality. Many companies may have them in an ad-hoc format. However, to successfully manage metadata, a company needs a solid metadata management function.
1. Business drivers and stakeholder requirements: different data management initiatives and stakeholders require various types of metadata. Metadata can be of multiple types. Therefore, the requirements must be identified and documented using a metamodel of metadata.
2. Metadata scope: Metadata includes a wide range of structures and elements. Data models and data lineage are examples of business and technical metadata structures. Implementation of these and similar metadata structures is time- and resource-consuming. To make the initiative feasible, a company must align the stakeholder requirements with the resources available.
3. Core metadata capabilities: Metadata, being a type of data, requires a similar set of core like governance, quality, modeling, architecture, and lifecycle management. Some of these capabilities can already be present in the company in an ad-hoc format. However, the implementation of formal functions could be necessary.
4. Metadata solutions: Among the wide variety of metadata solutions, a company must choose those that meet the identified requirements and scope.
